Manager, Motor Fuel Tax - Hybrid Work Environment, GA or TX

the home location for this role can either be Gainesville, GA or
Houston, TX. Must be willing to relocate to one of these areas if
you don't already live there.
This role is eligible to work a hybrid schedule once trained - 3
days in the office, 2 days remote. The Manager, Tax is responsible
for leading the excise tax team and for the development of and the
adherence to the appropriate processes to ensure all excise tax
deliverables and/or analysis is completed accurately and timely.
Responsibilities Coaching and Mentoring -
- Develop strong hiring and selection skills and work closely
with HR to ensure the selection of high performance staff to drive
the success of excise tax team in the future
- Develop clear goals for staff each year that support company
goals and objectives
- Develop a coaching strategy for staff to achieve or exceed
goals and objectives
- Regularly review performance with staff -
- Help staff focus on what is within their control to achieve
success
- Celebrate success -
- Quickly address performance issues in a constructive
manner
- Create positive accountability and follow-up to achieve goals
Departmental Leadership -
- Assist in developing sound, acceptable excise tax policies
- Maintain tax department calendar ensuing all deliverables
listed with owners and due dates
- Analyze and evaluate motor fuel tax transactions to be included
in a tax return
- Prepare tax returns, supplemental schedules, and payment
requests and file assigned returns
- Manage filing process to ensure all filings completed timely
and accurately
- Ensure returns are reviewed prior to filing for completeness
and accuracy
- Ensure all tax general ledger account balances are reconciled
monthly -
- Interact with customers to ensure organization remains up to
date with customer exemption certificates and tax situations
- Manage tax setup process for new customers and additional
customer locations ensuring accurate information is loaded into the
system and reviewed before billing customer -
- Develop relationships with suppliers, industry groups, and
state tax departments to assist in interpreting new compliance
guidelines
- Ensure all changes in tax rates are updated in the billing
system timely and appropriately communicated to the
organization
- Develop a communication plan for excise tax changes for
customers and employees
- Coordinate team and organization training on excise tax
issues
- Respond timely to state inquires and information requests
including coordinating all excise tax audits -
- Maintain tax department metrics and review results and action
items monthly
- Provide a regular feedback strategy for the department to
evaluate results and make improvements Position Requirements -
Formal Education & Certification
- Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field,
MBA/Masters a plus. Knowledge & Experience
- Minimum of five or more years of motor fuel excise tax
experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including
leadership positions -
- Management experience including people development skills and
leadership qualities
- Advanced Excel skills and experience required - Qualifications
& Characteristics
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and juggle between
divisional, local and corporate management demands
- An ability to see the excise tax team as a financially oriented
customer service function which balances cost control with support
for the business
- Possess a strong "client service" mindset and the ability to
use collaborative and non-adversarial approaches in achieving
diverse goals
- Strong mentoring and staff development skills are required
- Strong organizational, team-building and people skills; the
ability to work and navigate within a complex organization
- Strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to
assume increasing responsibilities in a rapidly-changing
environment Work Environment
- This role is eligible to work a hybrid schedule once training
is completed - 3 days in the office and 2 days remote
