THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT OF THEOPERATIONS DIVISION OF THE LOUISIANA SCHOOLS FOR THE DEAF & VISUALLY IMPAIRED (LSDVI)

THE VACANCY FOR THIS POSITION IS TO BE FILLED AS A JOB APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Per S.C.S. Rule 23.5,A job appointment is a temporary appointment of an employee to fill a position in the classified service for a limited period of time. An appointing authority may use a job appointment to fill a position for a period not to exceed four years. An appointing authority may terminate a job appointment at any time. This rule is subject to Rules 17.20(b)4 and 17.25 concerning layoff related actions.

The Louisiana Schools for the Deaf and Visually Impaired (LSDVI) includes two Louisiana

Special Schools (LSS) recognized as elementary and secondary school systems. Both schools occupy the same campus servicing students throughout the state who are deaf, hard of hearing and/or visually impaired. LSDVI operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

The employee in this job is responsible for performing horticultural duties necessary in the maintenance and repair of grounds for a 117 acre campus. The buildings include dormitories, school rooms, and specialty and administrative buildings covering approximately 450,000 square feet with 45,000 square feet of walkways and pavilions.

The employee in this position must be able to perform the necessary duties without significant risk or substantial harm to his/her own safety/security or the safety/security of others.

Physical activity level - 5. Work requires strenuous physical exertion for such activities as

climbing, lifting, objects weighing over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.

Work has some demand for more than ordinary strength of endurance.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or groundskeeping.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.

Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from a school accredited by one of the following regional accrediting bodies: the Middle States Commission on Higher Education; the New England Commission of Higher Education; the Higher Learning Commission; the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities; the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

To provide assistance, guidance, and limited support for an assigned group of Horticultural Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators, Helpers, Laborers, etc. engaged in grounds and non-highway roads maintenance.

General from Horticultural Attendant Foreman or other higher level supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

Functional over Horticultural Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators, Tree Specialist, Helpers, Laborers, etc. on a regularly assigned or recurring basis.

Location of Work:

May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from Operators, Horticultural Attendants, and related jobs by the presence of regular leadworker responsibilities.

Differs from Horticultural Attendant Foreman by absence of first line supervisory responsibilities.

Examples of Work

Performs a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of state facilities and grounds.

Prunes and removes trees ensuring safety and protection of people, landscaping, and facilities.

Monitors and assesses landscaping needs and reports to supervisor.

Provides guidance for subordinates as directed.

Surveys assigned jobs and insures that sufficient and proper material and tools are on hand to complete each day's work.

Directs the sequence of work and assigns tasks to subordinates.

Works with and sets the pace for assigned subordinates.

Keeps records as required by supervisor.
