Medical Technologist - Baton Rouge - Full Time - Nights (Sign On Bonus Available)

Job Description:

This job receives and prepares specimens according to standard protocols and procedures. Performs analytical laboratory tests and calculations according to section requirements and protocols, performs quality control procedures required for test performance, calibrates, and maintains and monitors laboratory equipment.

Education 

Required - Associates degree in a related field

Preferred - Bachelor's degree


Work Experience

Required - None.


Certifications

Required - Current applicable state license or temporary license as Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician, Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist

Meets Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and College of American Pathologists (CAP) requirements for testing personnel relative to scope of duties

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist

Any incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004 must successfully complete the requirements of the ASCP’s Certification Maintenance Program

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrates good judgement in performing duties and conflict resolution
  • Good interpersonal skills


Job Duties
•  Performs specimen testing with minimal errors within established time frames under the direction of a general supervisor.
•  As required, performs phlebotomy procedures following departmental protocol, ensuring a high level of patient satisfaction.
•  Performs quality control and instrument maintenance/troubleshooting.
•  Follows safety guidelines as outlined for department/institution and documents instances appropriately.
•  Accommodates the special needs of the organization by volunteering to do any work/task when staffing shortages occur in technical and non-technical areas due to inclement weather, electrical power outages, computer downtime or other situations.
•  Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

Physical and Environmental Demands

The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following:  Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force.
